To Keep Your Child Smiling!

Exams & Cleanings

Your child should be seen for their first exam when the first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. Not only does this pave the way for positive visits to the dental office, but it also gives Dr. Maixner an opportunity to educate and answer questions about your child’s dental health. Because kids’ mouths are constantly changing, we recommend a routine visit every six months after this first visit. Once your child has all of their baby teeth, we will clean, polish and examine your child’s smile for any evidence of cavities or other dental health problems. Throughout the entire appointment, we will explain to you and your child everything we are doing in a way that is fun and makes sense. We want each child to look forward to coming back to see us!

Sedation Options

Dental treatment can be intimidating with all the noises and feels; therefore, we have options for sedation to help achieve a positive and productive dental visit. For most kids, nitrous, or laughing gas, does the job. For some kids, especially under the age of 10, Dr. Maixner will provide an oral (non-IV) sedative drug that will help them completely relax during the procedure while remaining conscious. In more uncommon cases for children under the age of 5, Dr. Maixner may recommend that he complete your child’s dental treatment in a hospital setting. Your child’s safety is our priority, so if your child is especially nervous about treatment, we can discuss with you our sedation options and which will be best for your child.

Lip & Tongue Tie Procedure

Many children are born with a lip or tongue tie. A lip tie is when the lip is connected to the gums by a strip of tissue, while with a tongue tie the tongue is connected to the mouth floor. Both conditions can make it difficult for your child to eat, speak, and breastfeed. Dr. Maixner utilizes laser technology to release lip and tongue ties, keeping the child as comfortable as possible and minimizing pain and side effects. Ask your pediatrician or obstetrician about a referral to Dr. Maixner for an evaluation.
